In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
