Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
